AquaPi Aquaponics: Smart Monitoring for Your Recirculating Ecosystem

from $1,670.00
Home Assistant Hardware:

Managing an aquaponics system is a high-stakes balancing act. You aren't just growing plants—you are managing a living, closed-loop metabolical engine where fish waste fuels nitrifying biofilters, which in turn feed your crops. A failure in any part of this trio can ruin an entire harvest overnight.

AquaPi now features an integrated display! You can view your aquarium's vital water parameters live and in real-time right at the device—no need to pull up your Home Assistant dashboard just to do a quick spot-check.

Built for Scale and Precision:

The Aquaponics array utilizes an insulated, agriculture-grade hardware foundation explicitly designed to handle heavy organic bio-loads and provide continuous, rock-solid telemetry:

  • Integrated Wi-Fi Aquaponics Kit Foundation: Built around the Atlas Scientific Wi-Fi Aquaponics architecture, this system is designed for longevity and accuracy in demanding agricultural environments.

  • Precision Nutrient & Solid Tracking (EC): Fish waste mineralizes into bio-available salts for your crops. The included Electrical Conductivity (EC) sensor lets you measure dissolved solids in real-time, ensuring your plant beds are receiving adequate nutrition without accumulation to toxic levels.

  • Critical Symbiotic pH Stability: Fish, plants, and nitrifying bacteria all have conflicting pH sweet spots. AquaPi's lab-grade pH circuit tracks tiny changes, allowing you to catch pH crashes early and execute automated buffers before it stresses your fish or locks out crop nutrients.

  • High-Accuracy Water Vitals (RTD): Bacterial conversion rates and fish respiration are deeply tied to water temperatures. Monitor water vitals using a high-accuracy Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) probe to trigger water chillers or inline heaters automatically.

  • Atmospheric & Canopy Optimization (CO2 & Humidity): Plant growth requires tightly controlled transpiration and gas exchange. Natively log ambient relative humidity and gaseous carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) to calculate accurate Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) models, automatically controlling greenhouse exhaust louvers, intake fans, or supplementary lights.

  • Direct In-Line Integration: Probes are engineered for flexible deployment. Submerge them directly into your sump tank/fish array, or twist them cleanly into inline PVC manifold pipes for active loop logging. Why AquaPi Aquaponics?

Standard agricultural monitors are isolated, proprietary, and costly. AquaPi disrupts commercial ecosystems by delivering a fully custom, open-source member of your local smart home infrastructure.

  • Remote Peace of Mind: Track your bio-filter health, fish tank oxygenation, and humidity curves from your phone while away from the greenhouse.

  • Predictive Safety Arrays: Catch parameters trending toward danger zones before they cause root rot, biological filter stalling, or fish mortality. Use pre-built Home Assistant Blueprints to coordinate dosing pumps, top-off solenoids, or tank aerators.

  • Handcrafted Modular Flexibility: Build exactly what you need. The master PCB features expanded circuit channels, allowing you to mix and match sensor footprints easily as your commercial or back-yard array scales upward.

Included Sensors: Temperature, pH-EZO, Salinity EC-EZO, Dissolved Oxygen DO-EZO, CO2-EZO, Humidity HUM-EZO

What is AquaPi for ESPHome?

AquaPi for ESPHome is an open-source project that allows you to connect your aquarium to your home automation system. It uses an ESP32 microcontroller and a variety of sensors to monitor your aquarium's water quality and parameters. AquaPi then sends this data to your home automation system, Home Assistant*, where you can view it, set alarms, and create automations. Learn More

    • Open-Source vs. Proprietary: AquaPi is an open-source project. This means that the design and software are freely available, allowing for community contributions and modifications. In contrast, the Apex Neptune is a proprietary system with closed software.

    • DIY and Customization: AquaPi is designed for DIY enthusiasts. It uses a modular design with expansion slots, allowing users to add their own sensors and create custom solutions. Apex Neptune, while highly capable, is a more pre-built system with less emphasis on user customization at the component level.

    • ESPHome and Home Assistant Integration: AquaPi is specifically designed to work with ESPHome and Home Assistant. This gives users the flexibility and power of a general-purpose home automation system for their aquarium. Apex Neptune has its own software and ecosystem.

    • Cost-Effectiveness: AquaPi is designed to be an affordable aquarium monitoring and automation solution. By leveraging open-source software and readily available components, it can be a more cost-effective option compared to high-end commercial systems like the Apex Neptune.

    • Focus: AquaPi is primarily focused on monitoring and automation using sensors and integration with home automation systems. While it can control some devices, its strength lies in its data collection, alerting, and automation capabilities within the Home Assistant ecosystem. Systems like the Apex Neptune often include a broader range of built-in control features.

In essence, AquaPi prioritizes flexibility, customization, affordability, and integration with open-source home automation platforms, while systems like the Apex Neptune provide a more comprehensive, pre-built, and supported commercial solution.

  • Home Assistant is an open source home automation that puts local control and privacy first. This is what communicates and displays all your data from AquaPi, and so much more! This is what makes AquaPi different from other controllers. This can integrate with hundreds of other types of equipment and display the data in any way your needs require. While Home Assistant offers integration benefits, it is not a strict requirement for operating AquaPi. If you possess an existing Home Assistant infrastructure, AquaPi can function independently through its integrated web server.

Please note that functionality will be significantly reduced without Home Assistant. You only need 1 Home Assistant Instance to connect to multiple AquaPis. (see documentation).

  • Yes, AquaPi is designed to be flexible, allowing you to add your own sensors and create a custom solution for your aquarium.

  • Effortless Automation for Your Aquarium with AquaPi with Blueprints:

AquaPi empowers you to take complete control of your aquarium environment with intuitive automation. Leveraging the powerful Home Assistant Blueprints functionality, AquaPi simplifies the creation of automations, ranging from basic notifications to complex tasks like automated water changes.
